SUSTAINABLE ORNAMENTAL FISHERIES
Indonesia has been a hotspot of marine ornamental fish collection for the global market for at least 30 years. While the trade provides an important source of income for thousands of coastal communities, it is often based on unsustainable resource use and threatens the health of coastal marine ecosystems. A responsible and sustainable ornamental fish trade needs to be developed urgently and should be based on well-managed ecosystems and their resources, with shared responsibilities along the entire supply chains from the collectors to the consumers.
The marine ornamental trade in Indonesia has been active for so long that sustainability issues are now a matter for concern. Over-exploitation and the use of destructive collecting techniques are still widespread, with many high value targeted species being collected with cyanide. Stock mortalities remain high prior to export, because post -harvest handling techniques are poor and sourcing organisms that come from responsible and sustainable fisheries has also proven difficult due to a lack of reliable data.
As with other fisheries in Indonesia, effective reef fisheries management policies are currently lacking, and no local or national legal framework exists to support or regulate ornamental fish collection and trade. The trade is not an integrated business operation, which adds to the complexity of the supply chains. There are often several buyers between the collectors and exporters, which makes it a challenge to trace the origin of the stock. In addition, long trade routes negatively affect the health and survival rates of the organisms.
To address these issues, LINI, as the first and only local NGO working on the development of sustainable marine ornamental fisheries in Indonesia, aims to support the conservation and management of marine ornamental fisheries throughout Indonesia, by empowering coastal communities, providing training in practical skills, promoting fairer trade and more sustainable practices of marine resource use.
LINI works with partners including government, the private sector, and other organisations.

TRAINING
With its experienced and capable trainers, LINI is well- equipped to provide training on marine conservation, sustainable fisheries issues and dive training – general and scientific diving. We can deliver training to coastal communities, including fishermen, traders and local government. The examples of practical training LINI may include: collecting and post-harvest techniques, developing reef restoration using artificial reefs, mariculture through rearing.
REARING PROGRAM
LINI supports the fisher group in Les village to rear juveniles fish, such as Blue tang, Green Chromis, and Peach Anthias in the ocean cages. This rearing program has provided a learning platform and a stepping stone for fishers to nurture fish, prepare feeds, to learn many aspects of aquaculture.
HABITAT RESTORATION
The focus of this program is to restore fish populations and enhance habitats, with the goal that the restored reefs can provide alternative collection areas to reduce the pressure on natural reefs.
REEF RESTORATION
LINI is helping the coastal communities, in Buleleng and Karangasem – Bali and some places throughout Indonesia to rehabilitate their reefs by establishing artificial reef aggregation structures in damaged areas. The objective of this community-based reef rehabilitation is to regain the function of the reefs to serve as habitats for fish and other reef organisms, on which the coastal communities depend for their livelihoods.
In Bali, resorts are hosting reef restoration as part of their environmental care program. We help resorts to install artificial reefs, coral tables, and train their staff to monitor and maintain the sites.
LINI hopes to be able to continue assisting the coastal communities of Buleleng, who sincerely want to make positive changes to the marine environment there. Together with the fishing groups, LINI scientists have been monitoring and carefully recording the progress of reef restoration, and so far, the indications are good that significant numbers and species of fish (which had previously disappeared) are now returning to these reefs.
The types of artificial reefs being installed include shrimp pots, roti buaya and fishdomes.

SHRIMP POTS
These structures attract ornamental shrimps that are much in demand for the ornamental fish trade. The idea of these pots is to provide more breeding grounds and shelters for the shrimps, so that the fishermen of Les village can harvest them from the pots. This increases the numbers of shrimp they can catch, while reducing the pressures of collecting them from the wider reefs.
ROTI BUAYA
A one meter-long artificial substrates serves as hard surface for new settlements. Although corals will naturally settle and grow on these substrates, additional transplanted corals are being attached to each of the substrates in order to further accelerate the overall regrowth of coral cover.
FISHDOME
Fishdomes provide a large surface area on which corals and other organisms can settle and grow. They form a three-dimensional landscape on the previously bare reef flat, and immediately become refuges for large numbers of fish and other sea creatures. The pots, substrates and domes will last for many years- long enough for the natural reef to become well- established once more.
KELAS KREATIF
Kelas Kreatif was launched by LINI in the coastal villages of North Bali to provide extra-curricular activities for children. These informal sessions foster creativity and can be taught in any location.
Book In A Box – Children in coastal villages of North Bali are passionate about learning but have limited access to reading materials. Our Book In A Box program gives these children the opportunity to borrow books and discover the joy of reading.
Recycled Toys – LINI’s Kelas Kreatif program encourages children to conduct clean-ups on the beaches near their homes. We then make toys and games with their finds, such as this recycled bottle rocket.
Traditional Education – LINI runs a traditional education program with the children in North Bali coastal villages. At these sessions, children learn about their culture, including how to make traditional teas and play Indonesian instruments.

FISHERIES IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
A Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP) is an industry-led alliance of supply chain groups, from fishers to exporters to buyers, who work together to implement a management plan designed to help the fisheries meet the demands of the international market while reducing illegal fishing practices, habitat destruction and bycatch.
LINI and the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership are working together to help the seafood industry in Indonesia develop a Fisheries Improvement Project. LINI’s role is to assist small scale projects by supporting implementation of the projects in the field, including FIP training using SFP FIP tools, facilitating stakeholder consultations, and acting as coordinator for the industry-led FIP.
Information on the industry led FIPs is publicly available on the the industry website, which is administered by LINI. It is our role to assist the FIPs in updating FIP progress on the website, editing and reviewing the progress updates and supporting the administration of FIP implementation.

SMALL SCALE SMALL PELAGIC FISHERIES IN LOMBOK STRAIT
Project funded by IMACS – USAID to implement a monitoring protocol for small scale small pelagics fisheries from October 2013 to June 2014 involving 200 fishermen in East Bali (Kusamba and Seraya) and West Lombok (Ampenan and Bangko-Bangko) . The protocol involves using alogbook and 4 days of sampling landing surveys each month in specified sites. Data collected during the project period were uploaded into the I-Fish database, developed by IMACS. Two main species of Tongkol fisheries recorded from the project are shared stocks, as fishers from east bali and West Lombok fishing in the same fishing grounds in the Lombok Strait. The species are Frigate tuna (Auxis thazard) and Mackerel tuna (Euthynnus affinis). The Lombok Strait fishing ground is an important fishing area for fishermen from Bali and Lombok, where hundreds of boats fish everyday.

SMALL SCALE HANDLINE TUNA IN BANDA SEA
Tuna is an important artisanal fishery, supporting the livelihoods of coastal communities in the Banda Islands. It is being developed into a Fisheries Improvement Project, to support the management of tuna in Indonesia. Coastal Tuna from the Banda Sea are caught by fisherfolk who live on the remote volcanic islands of the Banda Archipelago in eastern Indonesia.These "Spice islands" are famous for originally being the main source of the world's nutmeg until the mid-19th century. At that time, nutmeg was more valuable than gold. Particularly interesting is that one of these small islands, called Rhun, was traded by the Dutch colonists who controlled Banda to the British, in exchange for what is now Manhattan island in the USA. The fishers catch tuna using handlines from very small two to three man boats that are equipped with ice. Every day, they leave their villages early in the morning, and on the same day they return to sell their catch to processing boat moored in a sheltered strait near their home. The Banda handline tuna fishery consists of at least 200 fishers.

Snapper and grouper are an important reef fishery throughout Indonesia and provides livelihoods for many thousands of fishers living in coastal areas, and on small islands across the archipelago. There are two sources of snapper that are part of the Fisheries Improvement Project. One is where snapper are caught with handlines on shallow reefs. Otherwise, they are caught using bottom longlines, which target fish at depths of between 70 to 120 meters. The Snapper and grouper fisheries in some parts of Indonesia are now suffering from over-exploitation and habitat destruction. With the ongoing implementation of the FIPs, it is hoped that the Snapper and grouper fisheries will have a chance to recover and continue to support current and future generations of fishers and their families, for whom this fish is the main source of income.

This increases the numbers of shrimp they can catch, while reducing the pressures of collecting them from the wider reefs.
ROTI BUAYA
A one meter-long artificial substrates serves as hard surface for new settlements. Although corals will naturally settle and grow on these substrates, additional transplanted corals are being attached to each of the substrates in order to further accelerate the overall regrowth of coral cover.
FISHDOME
Fishdomes provide a large surface area on which corals and other organisms can settle and grow. They form a three-dimensional landscape on the previously bare reef flat, and immediately become refuges for large numbers of fish and other sea creatures. The pots, substrates and domes will last for many years- long enough for the natural reef to become well- established once more.
KELAS KREATIF
Kelas Kreatif was launched by LINI in the coastal villages of North Bali to provide extra-curricular activities for children. These informal sessions foster creativity and can be taught in any location.
Book In A Box – Children in coastal villages of North Bali are passionate about learning but have limited access to reading materials. Our Book In A Box program gives these children the opportunity to borrow books and discover the joy of reading.
Recycled Toys – LINI’s Kelas Kreatif program encourages children to conduct clean-ups on the beaches near their homes. We then make toys and games with their finds, such as this recycled bottle rocket.
Traditional Education – LINI runs a traditional education program with the children in North Bali coastal villages. At these sessions, children learn about their culture, including how to make traditional teas and play Indonesian instruments.
Kelas Kreatif diluncurkan oleh LINI di desa-desa pesisir Bali Utara untuk memberikan kegiatan ekstra kurikuler untuk anak-anak. Ini sesi informal yang mendorong kreativitas dan dapat diajarkan di setiap lokasi.
Buku Dalam Kotak - Anak-anak di desa-desa pesisir Bali Utara bergairah tentang belajar tetapi memiliki akses terbatas pada bahan bacaan. Buku kami Dalam Sebuah program Box memberikan anak-anak ini kesempatan untuk meminjam buku dan menemukan sukacita membaca.
Daur ulang Mainan - Program Kelas Kreatif LINI ini mendorong anak-anak untuk melakukan bersih-up di pantai dekat rumah mereka. Kami kemudian membuat mainan dan permainan dengan menemukan mereka, seperti botol ini roket daur ulang.
Pendidikan tradisional - LINI menjalankan program pendidikan tradisional dengan anak-anak di desa-desa pesisir Bali Utara. Pada sesi ini, anak-anak belajar tentang budaya mereka, termasuk bagaimana membuat teh tradisional dan memainkan alat Indonesia.
FISHERIES IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
A Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP) is an industry-led alliance of supply chain groups, from fishers to exporters to buyers, who work together to implement a management plan designed to help the fisheries meet the demands of the international market while reducing illegal fishing practices, habitat destruction and bycatch.
LINI and the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership are working together to help the seafood industry in Indonesia develop a Fisheries Improvement Project. LINI’s role is to assist small scale projects by supporting implementation of the projects in the field, including FIP training using SFP FIP tools, facilitating stakeholder consultations, and acting as coordinator for the industry-led FIP.
Information on the industry led FIPs is publicly available on the the industry website, which is administered by LINI. It is our role to assist the FIPs in updating FIP progress on the website, editing and reviewing the progress updates and supporting the administration of FIP implementation.
Sebuah Perikanan Proyek Perbaikan (FIP) adalah sebuah aliansi industri yang dipimpin kelompok rantai pasokan, dari nelayan untuk eksportir untuk pembeli, yang bekerja sama untuk menerapkan rencana manajemen yang dirancang untuk membantu perikanan memenuhi tuntutan pasar internasional sekaligus mengurangi praktek penangkapan ikan ilegal , perusakan habitat dan bycatch.

SMALL SCALE SMALL PELAGIC FISHERIES IN LOMBOK STRAIT
Project funded by IMACS – USAID to implement a monitoring protocol for small scale small pelagics fisheries from October 2013 to June 2014 involving 200 fishermen in East Bali (Kusamba and Seraya) and West Lombok (Ampenan and Bangko-Bangko) . The protocol involves using alogbook and 4 days of sampling landing surveys each month in specified sites. Data collected during the project period were uploaded into the I-Fish database, developed by IMACS. Two main species of Tongkol fisheries recorded from the project are shared stocks, as fishers from east bali and West Lombok fishing in the same fishing grounds in the Lombok Strait. The species are Frigate tuna (Auxis thazard) and Mackerel tuna (Euthynnus affinis). The Lombok Strait fishing ground is an important fishing area for fishermen from Bali and Lombok, where hundreds of boats fish everyday.
Proyek yang didanai oleh IMACS - USAID untuk melaksanakan protokol monitoring untuk skala kecil kecil pelagis perikanan dari Oktober 2013 sampai Juni 2014 yang melibatkan 200 nelayan di Bali Timur (Kusamba dan Seraya) dan Lombok Barat (Ampenan dan Bangko-Bangko). Protokol ini melibatkan menggunakan alogbook dan 4 hari dari survei pendaratan sampel setiap bulan di situs tertentu. Dua spesies utama Tongkol perikanan tercatat dari proyek ini adalah saham bersama, sebagai nelayan dari bali timur dan Lombok Barat memancing di daerah nelayan yang sama di Selat Lombok. Selat Lombok fishing ground adalah daerah penangkapan ikan yang penting bagi nelayan dari Bali dan Lombok, di mana ratusan perahu ikan sehari-hari.
SMALL SCALE HANDLINE TUNA IN BANDA SEA
Tuna is an important artisanal fishery, supporting the livelihoods of coastal communities in the Banda Islands. It is being developed into a Fisheries Improvement Project, to support the management of tuna in Indonesia. Coastal Tuna from the Banda Sea are caught by fisherfolk who live on the remote volcanic islands of the Banda Archipelago in eastern Indonesia.These "Spice islands" are famous for originally being the main source of the world's nutmeg until the mid-19th century. At that time, nutmeg was more valuable than gold. Particularly interesting is that one of these small islands, called Rhun, was traded by the Dutch colonists who controlled Banda to the British, in exchange for what is now Manhattan island in the USA. The fishers catch tuna using handlines from very small two to three man boats that are equipped with ice. Every day, they leave their villages early in the morning, and on the same day they return to sell their catch to processing boat moored in a sheltered strait near their home. The Banda handline tuna fishery consists of at least 200 fishers.
Tuna adalah perikanan artisanal penting, mendukung mata pencaharian masyarakat pesisir di Kepulauan Banda. Hal ini sedang dikembangkan menjadi Perikanan Proyek Perbaikan, untuk mendukung pengelolaan tuna di Indonesia. Tuna pantai dari Laut Banda ditangkap oleh nelayan yang tinggal di pulau-pulau vulkanik terpencil di Banda Nusantara di kawasan timur Indonesia.These "pulau Spice" yang terkenal awalnya menjadi sumber utama pala dunia sampai pertengahan abad ke-19. Pada saat itu, pala itu lebih berharga daripada emas. SMALL SCALE SNAPPER AND GROUPER FISHERIES IN MAKASSAR STRAIT
Snapper and grouper are an important reef fishery throughout Indonesia and provides livelihoods for many thousands of fishers living in coastal areas, and on small islands across the archipelago. There are two sources of snapper that are part of the Fisheries Improvement Project. One is where snapper are caught with handlines on shallow reefs. Otherwise, they are caught using bottom longlines, which target fish at depths of between 70 to 120 meters. The Snapper and grouper fisheries in some parts of Indonesia are now suffering from over-exploitation and habitat destruction. With the ongoing implementation of the FIPs, it is hoped that the Snapper and grouper fisheries will have a chance to recover and continue to support current and future generations of fishers and their families, for whom this fish is the main source of income.
Kakap dan kerapu merupakan ikan karang penting di seluruh Indonesia dan memberikan penghidupan bagi ribuan nelayan yang tinggal di daerah pesisir, dan pulau-pulau kecil di seluruh nusantara. Ada dua sumber kakap yang merupakan bagian dari Perikanan Improvement Project. Salah satunya adalah di mana kakap yang ditangkap dengan Pancing di terumbu dangkal.
